Cheticamp (pop. 979)
Cheticamp is an Acadian fishing village and tourist centre located beneath the Cape Breton Highlands on the gulf of St. Lawrence. This town has a lot to offer, accommodations, good restaurants, stores, a hospital, an RCMP detachment, museums, beaches, a public wharf, a nine-hole golf course and recreational facilities. The Quai Mathieu waterfront boardwalk has an information bureau and various marine services. The Acadian Museum, near St. Peter's Church, features a small display of artifacts relating to the early settlers. Whale-watching and deep-sea fishing charters leave daily from the government wharf.
When we first arrived in Cheticamp we went on a whale watching cruse.
Right off shore we found a huge pod of pilot whales. Pilot whales are smaller than minkes
and related to dolphins. They even play like dolphins. We stayed with them for about 45
minutes then went up the coast looking for fin whales. We saw a bald eagle but no more
whales. It was a wonderful cruse.
We drove to Cheticamp Island to see the Lighthouse. The Farmers use the
whole island for their cows so there are no fence except around buildings. Due to the cows
there were flies all over the car when we arrived at the lighthouse. There was a fens
around it so I took a photo through the fens. We then left the lighthouse,
cows and flies behind and headed back to town.
After a nice dinner at Le Gabriel's we then went to stroll on Cheticamp's boardwalk and
watch the sunset.
Here are some photos from our afternoon around Cheticamp.
July 25, 1999 we started the day at the Dr. Elizabeth LeFort Gallery and
Museum, which displays artifacts and the fine hooked embroidery work of this
internationally acclaimed artist and other local artists who work in hooked rugs and
tapestries. Her hooked rugs have been in the White House, the Vatican, Buckingham
Palace...
There we read the literature and learned about the hooked rug industry in Cheticamp.
We drove down the coast to Inverness but the Miners Museum was closed. We did see a display of artwork by local artists, very modern and multimedia. Then back up to Cheticamp for a concert at the Park. It was some local group doing mostly Island music and we really enjoyed it. There were even a couple of fiddle tunes. We were able to record some of the music with the camera. Then off to French Lake hoping to see a moose. We waited about 20 minutes then were able to capture a moose on video tape. For dinner we tried the Harbour Inn and what a fabulous meal we had. Deb had the best broiled scallops of the whole trip and Ed had a great lobster.

After dinner we went out to the boardwalk to watch the sunset and walked
right in on a concert of local songs.
We recorded some more sights and sounds for your pleasure.
