Looking west along the South Wall. Close up is the Well Tower.
On the other side of the foot bridge is the Cradle Tower; constructed
as a private watergate it was defended by a double portcullis.
Cradle Tower contained a cradle for raising a boat from the water.
This watergate would allow the King to come and go freely at all
times without having to wait for the traffic at Traitor's Gate.
After the wharf was extended the watergate was replaced with a drawbridge.
