Pembroke College was
originally built in the fourteenth century by the Foundress,
Marie de St Pol, Countess of Pembroke.
This is a photo of the Old
Court section of Pembroke College were you will find
the oldest buildings of the college. The left wing shown here is
"The Porter's Lodge" which also has the main gate.
This gateway retains its ancient form and is the oldest surviving College Entrance in
Cambridge.
The right wing is "The Old Library" that was originally the College Chapel.
Pembroke was the first College to have its own chapel, rather than worship in the
neighbouring parish church. The Chapel suffered badly during the Civil War,
and was replaced by Matthew Wren's Chapel, the present one, in 1665.
In 1690 it became the College Library.
In the late nineteenth century it became a lecture room.
