This is the most attractive of Acre's caravanserais which once served the camel
caravans bringing grain and other produce from Galilee to the port.
Built by Ahmad El-Jazzar Pasha in 1785, its name means "inn of the pillars",
for the fine granite Herodian pillars brought here from Caesarea to support the structure.
The ground floor was used to store grain and house sheep and other beasts of burden.
The second floor was used by people for sleeping.
The tall clock tower was erected in 1906 in honor of the Turkish sultan Abdul Hamid.
